Stage Stats: A look at Stage 2

Weather: Partly cloudy to cloudy, intermittent rain, cool temperaturesin the mid to low 60s, brisk westerly winds
 
Stage winner: Loyal lead-out man Gert Steegmans took his firstcareer Tour stage win ahead of team captain Tom Boonen as QuickStep-Innergeticfinished one-two at the end of the crash-marred finale. Filippo Pozzato(Liquigas) was third.
 
Race leader: Prologue winner Fabian Cancellara (CSC) retainedthe yellow jersey despite falling hard in the day’s major pileup with abouttwo kilometers to go. Cancellara didn’t lose any time despite limping acrossthe line nursing a banged-up wrist because the crash happened within thefinal three kilometers. There were no major changes in GC, but Boonen movedup to seventh overall at 26 seconds back.
 
Green jersey: Boonen inherited the green jersey from overnightleader Robbie McEwen (Predictor-Lotto), whom he now leads by one point,56-55.
 
King of the Mountains: No mountain points were awarded, meaningDavid Millar (Saunier Duval-Prodir) will carry the polka-dot jersey backinto France tomorrow.
 
Best Young Rider: Vladimir Gusev (Discovery Channel), fifthin Saturday’s opening prologue, retained his six-second lead to ThomasDekker (Rabobank).
 
Best team: Astaná retained its two-second lead over TeamCSC.
 
Most aggressive rider: Marcel Sieberg (Milram) earned the day’scombative prize after initiating the day’s three-man break away, with theeight-man panel asking “just where did he think he was going? The skieswere threatening and it wasn’t terribly inviting for a promenade acrossthe Belgian countryside and the promise of a sprint finish reduced thehopes of victory to zero.”
 
Lanterne Rouge: Aleksandr Kuschynski (Liquigas) remained lastat 8:41 back.
 
Americans: Chris Horner (Predictor-Lotto) was the first to pickthrough the carnage of the crash to finish 79th. Fred Rodriguez (Predictor-Lotto)finished last and rode across the line gingerly holding his arm. GeorgeHincapie fell in the final crash, but remained the best-placed Americanin GC at fourth overall at 23 seconds back.
 
The peloton: The peloton remained 188 riders, but several remaindoubtful for Tuesday’s start following the nasty pileup.
