Stage stats: Stage 7

Stage 7, Bourg-en-Bresse to Le Grand-Bornand, 197.5km

Weather: Sunny, warmer, highs in mid 80s, moderate head-crosswinds

Stage winner: Tour rookie Linus Gerdemann (T-Mobile) joined a 15-man breakaway and bridged out to the attacking Dmitriy Fofonov (Crédit Agricole) on the day’s final climb on the Colombière. He counterattacked with 7km to go and soloed in 40 seconds ahead of the chasing Iñigo Landaluze (Euskaltel).

Race leader: Gerdemann moved from 20th into the maillot jaune, the 12th German to wear the leader’s jersey. Gerdemann is now 1:24 ahead of Landaluze as five riders from the day’s breakaway moved atop the leaderboard. Fabian Cancellara (CSC), back to domestique duties as he led the chase in the main pack, saw his weeklong run in yellow end and fell from first to 108th.

Green jersey: Tom Boonen (Quick Step-Innergetic) took first-place points ahead of Erik Zabel (Milram) at the day’s first sprint to expand his lead to 147-134 to Zabel. The breakaway sucked up points in the remaining two points sprints. Robert Hunter (Barloworld) moved into third in the points race following the departure of Oscar Freire (Rabobank).

King of the Mountains: Sylvain Chavanel (Cofidis) retained his lead on the climber’s jersey after taking third-place points on the day’s first Cat. 3 climb to lead for a total of 42 points. The breakaway scooped up points at the remaining three climbs, but two-time defending champion Michael Rasmussen (Rabobank) took first-place points at the first climb and 10 points on the Colombière to climb into seventh. Gerdemann moved into second with 30 points.

Overnight leader Vladimir Gusev (Discovery Channel), who held the white jersey since winning the prologue, finished with the favorites but slipped to third at 3:51 back. Best team: T-Mobile moved into the lead, 52 seconds ahead of Euskaltel, while overnight leader Team CSC only had two riders in the lead favorites’ group and fell to 13th.

Most aggressive rider: Gerdemann won the day’s prize, with the eight-man panel lauding him because “it’s hard to believe that his feat was premeditated, but to achieve the Tour’s grand slam – the stage victory, the yellow jersey and the white jersey – he had to have big ambition and impressive capabilities.”

Lanterne rouge: Mark Cavendish slotted into last, meaning there’s a T-Mobile rider in first place and last. Yesterday’s lanterne rouge - Enrico Degano (Barloworld) – abandoned.

Top American: Levi Leipheimer (Discovery Channel) finished a solid 14th in the stage and moved into 16th overall. George Hincapie, riding in the top five all week after the prologue, slipped to 54th after dropping out of the lead group on the Colombière.

The peloton: Oscar Freire (Rabobank) and Ruben Lobato (Saunier Duval), both DNS; Enrico Degano (Barloworld), DNF. The peloton is now 180 riders.

Announcements: Stage winner Gerdemann will be presented before Sunday’s start with a free ski holiday at Le Grand-Bornand.
