Stage winner: Robbie Hunter survived a mid-race echelon and late-race crash to bolt to his first career Tour stage victory ahead of Fabian Cancellara (CSC). The win is wild-card Barloworld’s second in three days and the first by a South African.
Race leader: Michael Rasmussen (Rabobank) retained the yellow jersey after finishing 46th with the front pack. Despite splits among the front pack due to a crash in the final two kilometers, all the leading 80 riders were awarded the same time as the winner. Christophe Moreau (Ag2r) dropped from sixth to 14th after getting caught out in a split in the main pack midway through the stage.
Green jersey: Stage-winner Hunter climbed into second in the race for the maillot vert after claiming 35 points at the line. Tom Boonen (QuickStep) went down in a pileup with about 700m to go and missed out on a chance to his lead. The Belgian now leads the South African 160-149 with Erik Zabel (Milram) dropping to third with 144 points.
King of the Mountains: No major shakeups with only one Cat. 4 climb on the menu. Rasmussen kept his grip on the King of the Mountain jersey, 98 to 79 on second-place rider Juan Mauricio Soler (Barloworld).
Best Young Rider: No major shakeups as Alberto Contador (Discovery Channel) retained the white jersey with Linus Gerdemann (T-Mobile) remaining in second at 3:37 back.
Best team: Team CSC retained its 5:02 lead on Caisse d’Epargne with Discovery Channel in third at 5:08.
Most aggressive rider: Benoit Vaugrenard (FDJeux) won the day’s prize, with the eight-man panel lauding him for his “perseverance to attack with the dream of winning a stage of the Tour de France … but the peloton acted contrary to his plans, and he was caught at 79km.”
Lanterne Rouge: Wim Vansevenant (Predictor-Lotto) remained last in the GC at 1h57:10 back.
Top American: Christian Vande Velde (CSC) finished 17th with the main group while Levi Leipheimer (Discovery Channel) moved up to eighth at 3:53 back.
The peloton: Sylvain Calzati (Ag2r) and Igor Anton (Euskaltel) abandoned; Dave Zabriskie (CSC) finished outside the time cut. The peloton numbers 168 riders.
