Stage winner: Alexandre Vinokourov (Astana) - who nearly abandoned after crashing hard on both knees in stage 5 - won in a remarkable display at 1:14 ahead of an equally impressive Cadel Evans (Predictor-Lotto). The victory was Vino’s fourth career Tour stage victory and his first Tour time trial. “For me, the Tour begins today,” he said.
Race leader: Michael Rasmussen (Rabobank) retained the yellow jersey after what he described as the best time trial of his life. The Dane climber stopped the clock at 2:55 slower in 11th. He held the maillot jaune for the sixth day, now 1:00 ahead of Evans who slotted into second. “I guess I surprised everybody today, including myself,” he said.
Green jersey: Tom Boonen (QuickStep-Innergetic) kept the green jersey after safely making the time cut in 157th at 11:08 back (some Belgian journalists wondered out loud that he might be eliminated). With points awarded only to the top 10 finishers, none of the challengers scored any points. Boonen leads Robbie Hunter (Barloworld) 195-175.
King of the Mountains: Rasmussen retained the polka-dot jersey, 98-89 to Juan Mauricio Soler (Barloworld), as only the top-3 finishers were awarded points over the Cote de la Bauzié.
Best Young Rider: Alberto Contador (Discovery Channel) widened his grip on the white jersey to Linus Gerdemann (T-Mobile) to 4:28.
Best team: Astana moved atop the team classification after pushing three riders into the top four. Discovery Channel remained in second, now 54 seconds back, with overnight leader CSC slipping to third at 2:19 back.
Lanterne Rouge: Wim Vansevenant (Predictor-Lotto) remained last in the GC at 2h03:34 back.
Top American: Levi Leipheimer (Discovery Channel) finished ninth at 2:42 back and climbed into fifth at 4:23 back.
The peloton: All riders remained in the race. The peloton remained 166 riders.
Medical report:Cancellara (CSC), Isasi (Euskaltel), Gusev (Discovery Channel), Jalabert (Agritubel), Kashechkin and Klöden (both Astana) all crashed but did not require medical attention
Jury decisions:Saunier Duval-Prodir sport director fined 200 CHF and relegated to last position in Sunday’s stage for driving dangerously and provoking an accident
